If you’re having a hard time deciding which method of hair removal is best for you, this blog will compare the pros and cons of both Laser Hair Removal and Waxing!
Both are very effective methods to getting rid of unwanted hair, but it can be difficult to choose which will be the best fit for you and your wants/needs. As an aesthetician who offers both services at spectrum laser & skin care specialties, here is my professional quick break down…
Waxing gets rid of unwanted hair. It removes the entire hair shaft from underneath the skins surface, leaving you with no hair in the area immediately after a treatment. While you do leave a waxing treatment feeling soft and smooth, the hair that was waxed will grow back typically within 3-6 weeks post treatment. Waxing is a great option for a short term need such as an event or special occasion. While waxing can sometimes make hair regrowth thinner over time, it is not a method of long term hair removal and it is something that will need to be kept up on a regular schedule, typically monthly. Because of this, waxing can be more expensive for people in the long run. While it may seem cheaper at first, it adds up over time as waxing appointments take place roughly once a month. Waxing can also be quite painful for some people depending on the area being waxed and how sensitive they are. clients often leave waxing appointments feeling a slight sting to the skin from the wax and wax strip ripping repeatedly in the same area.Â
Laser Hair Removal is a long term method of getting rid of those unwanted hairs. IPL laser creates a photo-thermal reaction in which light energy is turned into heat energy. This heat/light then depletes the hair follicle of moisture, burning the hair at the root. IPL lasers are able to target this hair without damaging any of the surrounding healthy skin which is why we love this method of hair removal. Laser is much less painful than waxing and is often described as being flicked with a rubber band. The sensation only lasts for a moment and doesn’t typically linger once the treatment has finished. Laser has much more long term results than waxing as it is targeting the hair follicle its self, and not just removing the hair from the body. This means, that after each laser session any hair regrowth will be much finer/thinner and the hair in the treatment area will become patchier in growth, leaving bald spots where hair once was. As the hair becomes less and less, shaving the area being treated will become easier and gentler, meaning you will experience less razor burn and in grown hairs. The laser is micro-exfoliating which helps with these common issues as well! Laser sessions typically more expensive than waxing when compared to single appointment cost,  however they are cheaper in the long run as sessions are less frequent and when you are finished treatments all you will need is a touch up every now and then (roughly 1-4 times a year, if that)! Â
